Florals For Spring

Wednesday, April 29, 2020

'Florals for spring? Groundbreaking.'

As a huge fan of The Devil Wears Prada film, Miranda Priestley's most iconic quote comes to mind every spring time when I start to spot floral prints in shops. However, this year feels a little different. The floral trend is making its mark this year, and I dare say it is... groundbreaking! From tea dresses to midi skirts, styles seem to be designed to suit a floral print right now, and my wardrobe has definitely welcomed an item or two over the past couple of months with such a gorgeous design.

I am really excited to welcome the floral print during the lockdown because it adds a little bit of pretty femininity to otherwise simple loungewear. I don't know about you, but some days, it makes me feel so much better to just have a proper outfit on - perhaps it's the normality of it! New Look and Miss Selfridge have some lovely graphic t-shirts with a floral design, which are perfect to chill in while feeling a bit more put together.

Jumpsuits are also a perfect lockdown option because not only are they super comfortable, you don't have to find anything to match, just throw it on! I recently bought this ditsy floral black and white jumpsuit from New Look's Generation 915 range - I was so surprised there would be something so my style in the girls section that I couldn't resist. It is very similar to this Miss Selfridge jumpsuit, and its lightweight cotton makes it perfect for spring days spent... well, not doing a right lot, this year, but it also makes me excited for when I can finally wear it out properly on summer days out.

For feeling a little bit fancier, I love a good midi skirt - they're lovely and light for days spent in the garden - and adding a floral print is just perfection. The trend is so versatile that there is something to suit everyone, from a black and white print, to something super colourful.

Maybe because we can't go out the same, a floral outfit is the perfect way of taking nature inside. Are you adding some florals to your wardrobe this season, or perhaps bringing out some you already own?

Glossier Wishlist

Wednesday, April 22, 2020

Glossier might just have to be the beauty brand that I am most excited by right now. From the first time I visited their London store last November (I am just counting down the days until I can finally get back there), I fell in love with their products. The winning formulas, the easy to use ideas, the simple and sleek packaging - need I say more?!

Each time I've been in store I've limited myself to only purchasing two products, but it was always a tough decision, meaning I have formed quite the wishlist!

Milky Jelly Cleanser

Glossier's cleanser is one of their original products and also one of their most popular. The cleanser is so popular because of how gentle it is and its jelly formula that means you can use it on both wet or dry skin. I have already tried the Milky Oil Makeup Remover so it will be great to be able to use them together for the ultimate cleanse.

Futuredew Serum

Another of Glossier's top rated products, the Futuredew serum is an 'oil hybrid serum' that adds a gorgeous glow to your skin. The reviews always contain photos of glowing, beach ready skin, that is just what we all want. I love that this can be used just before makeup to also act as a primer, keeping your makeup in place and glowing all day.

Invisible Shield

Invisible Shield is Glossier's SPF stick, which they recommend popping on before makeup to ensure you are protected from the sun all day. I think this is a great idea for protection when you're going to be out and about in the spring and summer all day. Liquid sun creams always make me feel like I'm going to the beach and tend to mess up my makeup, so this could be a good alternative. This is perfect to add to your morning skincare routine to make sure you stay sun protected daily.

Lash Slick

Glossier's mascara, Lash Slick, looks so sleek and has so many positive reviews. It is marketed as the perfect mascara for everyday because it lengthens without overdoing the volume. While it isn't waterproof, it is 'water resistant', meaning it's easy to take off but not going to smudge. I don't usually feel particularly excited by mascara but this one is definitely on my wishlist to try out.

Skywash in Terra

Because I already love the Skywash I recently purchased in the shade Valley, I would love to try another shade from the collection. A liquid matte eyeshadow that dries to a powder finish, the formula is incredible - easy to blend and long-lasting. I chose Valley because it looked like the perfect everyday, no thought required shade, which it is, but I'd love to go a shade darker and try Terra for a smokier look.

Stretch Concealer

While I do swear by my favourite L'Oreal concealer, I would love to give Glossier's a go. I've heard good reviews from a friend as well as read many online so I don't think I'll be disappointed. I can't decide how easy it will be to apply, being in a little pot, but it's worth trying to find out. I love how buildable the formula looks, I think it would be great for popping under the eye.

Generation G Lipstick in Cake

Glossier's lipsticks have such sleek packaging and a small but gorgeous shade range - of course, as a huge lipstick fan, I would love to try one. However, the first time I swatched these, in the winter when I like a darker, more pigmented lip shade, I really didn't think they had enough colour in them. I picked one up again a few weeks ago and now that it's spring I actually quite like the look of them. They are 'sheer matte' lipsticks which seems pretty contradictory to me but their little pop of colour looks perfect for summertime. The shades Cake and Leo in particular seem right up my street.

What's your favourite product from Glossier? I'd love to hear what you're loving, or maybe something you would love to try out yourself?

Six Skincare Saviours

Wednesday, April 15, 2020

Glossier's mantra is 'skincare first, makeup second' and recently I have been inspired to adopt this approach a little more in my beauty routine. I have been experimenting a little more than usual with some skincare products and have found six that I cannot recommend to you enough.

The makeup remover - Glossier Milky Oil

I have given my first impressions of this product when I bought it a few months ago, and it is still a product I reach for whenever I've worn a lot of makeup - although of course this isn't the case as much recently while in lockdown! A little goes a long way with this product, as only a couple of drops on a cotton pad will quickly and easily remove all makeup. I'd recommend following this up with a cleanser straight away to remove any remaining oily residue.

The Cleanser - The Ordinary Squalane Cleanser

The cleanser of choice has to be from The Ordinary. Their Squalene Cleanser is the perfect product for its affordable price, and is really easy to use either on its own in the shower or as part of a skincare routine with the rest of these products. It leaves me feeling so refreshed, although for me the scent reminds me of uni now because I used it daily while I was there!

The Toner - Pixi Glow Tonic*

Maybe my favourite product of the entire post because of how much of a difference it makes, the Pixi Glow Tonic is a cult favourite, adored by the masses, and it is easy to see why. I apply this nightly to the T-Zone of my face, the area that is often quite oily when I wake up, and it really works to keep the oil at bay. It really evens out the complexion while providing a boosting glow, as its name suggests.

The Exfoliant - Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

I'm going to be writing up a full post about some Dermalogica products I've been trying out very soon, but one of my favourite products I'm using right now is their exfoliating powder. While its name suggests daily use, I prefer to simply use it whenever my skin feels a little dry. On areas that do tend to feel dry, which for me is always around my eyebrows, this works miracles in making the skin feel so much more smooth. It's really easy to make this powder into a paste and it's really gentle on the skin too.

The Moisturiser - Simple Light Moisturiser

I believe that Simple is such an underrated skincare brand; they are so affordable and never really go wrong! Their light moisturiser has been part of my skincare routine for years and years, and honestly? For the price point, no other moisturiser lives up to it for me. It is fragrance free and the perfect last step of my nightly skincare routine.

The Hand Cream - Body Shop Hand Cream

This is maybe more of a bodycare product than skincare? But it still deserves a mention! I hadn't been a huge fan of hand cream in the past, Soap & Glory's Hand Food made me think that they would all be as greasy as that one was, which just isn't comfortable! So, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I love The Body Shop's one, which is so soft and doesn't leave any residual gross feeling, just settling into the skin nicely instead. Mine is one of the Christmas scents, juicy pear, however they offer it in many other scents - personally I'd recommend the mango scent!

What are your favourite skincare products?

New T-shirt Additions

Wednesday, April 08, 2020

When shopping for new additions to my wardrobe, I aim to pick up items that I truly love and know will easily pass the 30 wear rule. Therefore, I find it fairly easy to walk past that gorgeous dress in the window, knowing that I will only have an opportunity to wear it once in a blue moon. But T-Shirts are the item of clothing I find myself wearing again and again, and love to purchase ones I know are going to last years and get plenty of wears. Here's a few that have entered my wardrobe lately.

Let's start with Topshop, one of my all-time favourite brands for T-Shirts. In truth, their quality and price is an unbeatable combination. I've picked up a couple of more basic ones from Topshop, starting with this washed charcoal grey t-shirt with the little zebra embroidered on it. I thought this was a really cute addition to a classic t-shirt. It has the perfect fit of not too long, but not too short that you can't tuck it in, so an all round winner.

I also picked up a Topshop 'Weekend' T-Shirt in dark green. I absolutely love the colour but only have more dressed up items in it, whereas this is much more casual. I love the oversized fit with the longer sleeve length, it's super easy to style with jeans for a comfortable look.

I have also recently been loving H&M and have picked up a couple of T-Shirts from there. Firstly, I absolutely love this 'Bright Future' embroidered t-shirt with the four leaf clover on it. Ironically I wore this on the day my uni announced its closure and the future didn't feel all that bright, but I like its hope and optimism - and you can never go wrong with a white t-shirt. I also love the colour of this pink t-shirt, with the embroidered 'love' on - I think you can guess that I love anything with embroidery on it, I think it adds such a cute touch.

I am loving the floral designs that are everywhere right now and added this to my collection in a couple of ways. If you have read my New Look edit, you may have noticed the black t-shirt with flowers on that I featured in it. Sadly it sold out not long after I bought it, however there's quite a few similar styles available. I also bought a floral print t-shirt from Miss Selfridge which has the softest material, it feels such good quality. I also love the colour of the flowers, it matches so well with my new Topshop jacket.

Additionally, a couple of months ago, while in Urban Outfitters I decided to treat myself to a t-shirt by Levi's. I'm not usually one for a slogan print but I love the pastel colours of the lettering. I think this would look amazing with a pair of mom jeans for a relaxed look.

I was a little bit disappointed that the T-Shirt I ordered from The 1975's shipping date has been pushed back so I can't feature it in this post! I was planning to get a T-shirt at their concert, but on the same day they released this one online and I really like it. It fits with that floral print theme that I am loving right now!

SHOP THE EDIT:

My t-shirt collection has definitely been well stocked and it will not be seeing any more additions for a good long time now! Up to this point, most of them were looking pretty worn so I'm really excited to have some new pieces in there for when I can properly wear them out. I'd love to hear if you've added anything exciting to your wardrobe lately!

The Glossier Skywash

Sunday, April 05, 2020 Glossier, 13 Floral St, Covent Garden, London, UK

The Skywash is Glossier's latest product release, which I am going to review today. We're so used to brands bringing out products that are just a different variety of something already on the market, so this launch really excited me because I had never seen anything like it before. A matte liquid eyeshadow is something that sounds so simple, but I had never seen one anywhere before. Until Glossier finally transformed my life with their Skywash.

I love a liquid eyeshadow on an applicator and have tried many over the years from the likes of NYX, No.7 and even Glossier themselves, but they always have a shimmery finish, which isn't the easiest to apply. I will try and concentrate the product on the lid but always somehow have glitter everywhere. This is why I had always fancied a matte option, which I could just swipe and blend in all over the lid and crease without fuss.

The Glossier Skywash allows us to do just that. By taking the applicator and swiping a little in the centre of the eye, you can then use a finger to blend it out. I love how buildable the formula is, meaning you can add a little bit for a light wash, or keep blending it in for stronger pigmentation.

There's a whole seven shades to choose from in the Skywash range, so I think there is something for everyone's skin tone or preference. Personally, I prefer a warm toned eyeshadow, so I was really spoilt for choice between the three orange-toned shades. I stood for ages in Glossier's London store swatching them all! I was torn between Palm, a peachy shade, Valley, a true orange and Terra, a darker, more terracotta shade.

All of them looked right up my street, however I settled on Valley. This seemed like the perfect shade for me to try because it didn't seem to light or too dark. I liked Terra but I was worried it would be a bit too much and too dark for me! I figured I could keep building up Valley if I wanted a darker look. Other shades in the collection include Pebble, which is a gorgeous neutral beige tone, and Pool, a blue that is a real 70s throwback.

I absolutely love how easy the Skywash is to apply. My favourite thing about this sort of product is that it feels so quick and easy to use - definitely a travel staple. You can blend in other eyeshadows (I reach for the oranges in the ABH Modern Renaissance) and almost use it as a base product; as long as you give it a little time to try, it doesn't budge at all which I was really impressed by. As a side note, you also don't need eye primer when using it - the first time I tried it, I used eye primer on one eye to see if it made a difference, and it did not.

Overall I am really impressed with the Glossier Skywash and it has become one of my favourite products of theirs. I am really excited about Glossier as a brand right now and hope for more releases just as good as this one! Do you fancy trying out the Skywash?

The Netflix Social Distancing Saviours

Wednesday, April 01, 2020 The Sofa

Without a doubt, Netflix is definitely going to be our saviour over the next few weeks while we're all in isolation. Over the past few months I have discovered some new shows while also rewatching some old favourites so today I'll be sharing my much-loved recommendations with you.

The Good Place

If you are in need of an uplifting, feel good comedy, The Good Place is the perfect answer. Starring Kristen Bell as the lovable lead Eleanor Shellstrop, the series follows four individuals who end up trying to better themselves through learning philosophy and ethics. Each of the characters have such likeable and unique personalities and it truly is a heartwarming show. The series really stands out because of its numerous plot twists that you never see coming and its fast-paced nature. The writers could have dragged out one episode into an entire season but they have so much content they don't need to! This keeps the storyline really interesting the entire series, it never drags at all.

Outnumbered

The classic British sitcom Outnumbered, about the lives of the Brockman parents and their three unruly kids has always been one of my favourite shows. The fact that a lot of it is improvised adds to the amazing comedic value; sometimes you just can't believe the things the children come out with! I have watched some episodes countless times because it will never get old for me, the situations the family find themselves in are hilarious.

Derry Girls

Derry Girls has very quickly become one of my all time favourite TV series and I can't rave about it enough. The series focuses on four girls from Derry and one 'wee English fella' and their lives growing up through The Troubles in Northern Ireland in the 1990s. The first season is on Netflix but the second is currently only on All 4. With only six episodes in each (why are British series always so short?!), the series is very quick to get through so I've already watched it through twice since January! I imagine I will watch it many more times until I can recite every word because I cannot get enough; all the characters are really likeable and it is just so hilarious.

The Stranger

Moving on from comedies which are my usual choice of TV series, I have also found a couple of dramas that I have really enjoyed on Netflix. The first being The Stranger which has found itself in Netflix's top 10 for many weeks now - no wonder why! It is based on the Harlan Coben novel, but has a Northern English setting instead of American which makes it feel a little more realistic to me, being able to recognise a couple of the Manchester locations! 'The Stranger' causes havoc by revealing people's secrets and causing more harm than good. It's super interesting with a great cast, and really gripping - I would have to keep watching the next episode because I HAD to find out what happened next!

Safe

Safe is an adaptation from another novel by The Stranger's author, so of course that was my next watch. You can see the similarities between Safe and The Stranger, as they are both part detective-investigation, part man's loved one (wife or daughter) goes missing and he keeps putting himself in grave danger to find her because he thinks he knows better than the cops. I actually think I prefered this one slightly more, there were a few more comedic moments and I warmed to the characters a bit more. There also seems to be less loose ends in this one, because The Stranger is often criticised for some of its storylines just being a distraction to the main event. In Safe, the threads are tied together much better.

Next In Fashion

Next In Fashion is my sort of reality show - it's a competition of fashion designers from all around the world competing for $250,000, hosted by Alexa Chung and Tan France. The presenters are so likeable which definitely helps because a few of the contestants can be a little... irritating. The show features some inevitable drama which feels pretty manufactured, but this aside the show is really inspiring and creative which is really enjoyable.

Dead To Me

This is one that I am halfway through watching so I can't give a full review, but it centres around the life of Christina Applegate's character, a mum who is trying to solve the mystery of her husband's death in a hit and run crash. This sounds quite serious, however it is made quite comedic by her angry personality and the fact she has made friends with Judy who seems to be hiding a shady secret. I can't wait to watch it all unravel!

Need more recommendations? Read my post from last July with even more of my favourite tv series. Some of my favourite series such as The Crown, Suits and Brooklyn Nine Nine are mentioned in that one! What is your favourite show? I definitely need more recommendations myself!
